Bair Art Edition's Tutorial on: Epson Professional Printing Workflow
How to Avoid Paper Waste
The 7600 and 9600 printers are prone to wasting roll paper on both sides of the print. This module discusses why that happens and how to avoid it.
Waste #1 - Before the Print
Every time you select "Roll Cutter Off" as your paper source on the printer console, you are wasting paper, especially if the leading edge is not very straight. The printer ejects anywhere from 4-12" excess paper in an attempt to make sure the roll feeds through and the print will be sprayed onto a good surface.
That extra waste of paper (what I call a "tounge") is avoidable by either choosing "Roll Auto Cut" or "Sheet" as the paper source, at least for the loading stage of the paper.
Roll Auto Cut still wastes an inch or two, but not as much as Roll Cutter Off. This is a safe setting, as it doesn't create a conflict with the printer driver if you are using a roll paper settings - on the driver.
If, however, you want no paper waste, then select Sheet as the source while loading the paper, then once it is loaded, quickly change it to one of the roll paper options! If you do not, once you print, the printer driver will see a conflict between its settings and the printer's settings and it will give you a headache.
Don't decide to just use Sheet settings on both the driver and the printer, it may avoid waste on the front end, but the printer will end up "spitting" out the entire roll looking for the other edge of the sheet.
Note: If this ever happens to you, you have no recourse but to unplug the machine, or lift the paper lever.
Waste #2 - After the Print
In order to keep the paper from sliding around, the paper lever secures it to the printer. This, however, is detrimental to roll paper if the paper is left in the printer with the lever engaged upon it.
A distinct crease is always left on the paper, which ruins that portion of the media. It is no longer acceptable for printing.
To avoid this, simply unload the paper (at least from under the lever) once a print is done. You only have an average of 15 minutes before an indellible crease is formed.
