Grouping Adjustment Layers
In the last section, we separated the foreground out into a new layer with fine edges. Now we are going to apply an adjustment to that layer without affecting the background.
Make sure you are on the layer you want to adjust, and select Layer/ New Adjustment Layer..., and select one. In this case we'll use curves:

When the new layer menu comes up, click on Group With Previous Layer

The results are as follows (I applied two curves adjustments, one for exposure, and one for contrast):
